Where it all started...the story of NAAR
The short version
About 12 years ago, I volunteered at a local animal shelter. It was called Heavenly Angels Animal Rescue. After a few years, sadly their shelter closed, but they still do rescue, foster and adoptions. (Look them up!) It brought me so much comfort and peace being there, and I knew somehow, I needed to fill that missing piece of me. (It also brought some amazing friends into my life)
Noah’s Ark is a Rockaway based animal rescue that was formed in 2015. Over the years we have become stronger and work as not only a strong team but alongside other amazing local rescuers.
In the early days, I was mainly on my own until a chance encounter with Scott while rescuing an injured cat. His departure after nearly three years of exceptional teamwork was a loss, but the spirit of our mission continued. Laura later joined me, and together with her late husband, Ernie, we formed a small but determined team focused on rescuing cats in our unique way.
Fostering, while challenging, is incredibly rewarding—offering the chance to nurture kittens until they’re ready for adoption.
Although it's been some time since I've fostered, the impact of those experiences stays with me. Our TNR (trap-neuter-return) efforts, particularly with Donna's help, have significantly reduced the potential street cat population in Rockaway, showcasing the strength and dedication of our team. Recently celebrating five years with Donna highlights the stability and commitment within our team.
Our journey has been enriched by numerous volunteers, fundraisers, and the incredible people we've met along the way. Reflecting on the day’s challenges and successes, especially in animal rescue, is profoundly fulfilling. The gratitude in the eyes of a family united with their new pet is indescribably rewarding.
Noah's Ark has grown into a strong team since its inception. The strength of a nonprofit lies in its community support. Together, we have achieved and will continue to achieve far more than we ever could alone, driven by our shared commitment to animal welfare.
